Fed: Rabbit-Proof Fence wins AFI's Best Film
Rabbit-Proof Fence, PHILLIP NOYCE's stolen generation tale, has taken out Best Filmat this year's Australian Film Institute awards tonight.
In a field dominated by indigenous stories, veteran Aboriginal actor DAVID GULPILIL,who also starred in Rabbit-Proof Fence, has won Best Actor for his role in the colonialstory The Tracker.
While not nominated for best picture, Walking on Water -- which delves into the complexitiesof euthanasia and the grieving process -- has scooped the most awards finishing with fivegongs, including Best Actress for MARIA THEODORAKIS.
IVAN SEN has won Best Director for his debut Beneath Clouds -- a present day tale abouttwo Aboriginal teenagers' search for identity.
In the television categories, the ABC's suburban comedy Kath and Kim has won the awardfor Best Television Drama.
JOEL EDGERTON star of the twentysomething series Secret Life of Us, picked up BestActor and JULIET STEVENSON won Best Actress for her role in the ABC telemovie, The RoadFrom Coorain.
