Vic: IVF doctor to challenge IVF ban for single women
MELBOURNE, Feb 25 AAP - An IVF specialist who helped a lesbian and her gay friend to
conceive a child has mounted a constitutional challenge to Victoria's ban on IVF for single
women.
The Age reported today that Dr John McBain would argue in the Federal Court that Victoria's
stance contravened federal sex discrimination laws.
In his application to the court, Dr McBain reportedly said one of his patients was
a single woman seeking IVF treatment in Victoria but he was unable to offer it to her
because of her marital status.
